Porsche #1 in the early 80s

A friend of mine sent me this picture of #1 at an event in the early 80s.  Here is what he said about the picture:

“Here is the photo of me in the very first car to carry the Porsche name and Marque. I was 41 at the time.

This was the car that Dr. Ferdinand Porsche designed and built as his first prototype in an effort to market his concept of a sportscar and raise funds for his first production run in 1948.

It is the legendary car you read about in the books that chronicle the history of Porsche.

As I mentioned, I was the Technical Chairman for the 356 Registry West Coast Weekend held in August, 1982. The “Weekend” was held simultaneously with the Pebble Beach Concours D’ Elegance and the Classic Car Race held at Laguna Seca.

One of my assignments was to get this car transported to the various display locations.

The picture was taken by a friend in front of the Double Tree Inn, Fisherman’s Wharf, Monterey, CA. I received it as a Christmas present a few years later.

The car currently resides in the Porsche Museum, Stutgart, Germany.

I love history shots like this!  Also, check out the car on the trailer in the background.
